Thuja characteristics

Native to North America and Asia, the thuja is a coniferous species belonging to the cupressaceae family. It is cultivated as an ornamental tree, in order to form large hedges, or even, for the most fanciful, abstract or figurative figures. Thuja is an evergreen tree with evergreen scales. Its wood is light and very aromatic, and it is particularly resistant to humidity.

Varieties of thuja

There are three main species of thuja, the giant thuja, the Canada thuja and the eastern thuja, which can reach up to fifty meters in height.

Cedar planting and maintenance

Thuja is particularly resistant to cold, it tolerates temperatures up to -25 ° C. Planted in spring or in autumn, this conifer can be planted in any type of soil, it will always flourish. It usually grows in the sun, but the thuja also likes to be planted in a slightly shaded location. Thuja requires relatively little maintenance, except for two prunings, one at the end of summer and the other at the very beginning of spring. It is also necessary to provide it with organic matter in the first years, to facilitate its growth. The thuja cuttings are made in sandy soil in August.
